A Day In The Life Of An Esseco UK Project Manager: Navigating Challenges, Embracing Project Management As A Way Of Life

We are thrilled to introduce our new Project Manager, Ashok. In this brief interview, Michelle Loughlin – Esseco UK’s HR Manager – delves into who he is, his work, his role, and why he decided to join us at Esseco UK.
Getting to know the brilliant minds that form our teams is always an exciting and proud moment for us.

Michelle (M): What does a typical day look like for a Project Manager – if there is such a thing!?

Ashok (A): The role of a Project Manager is crucial for Esseco UK operations, serving as the single point of contact for a multimillion-dollar project portfolio. There really is no typical day as a project manager: tasks and priorities can vary from day to day based on project needs. I begin my day early, preparing for the day ahead so that as soon as I arrive at the office, I’m ready to hit the ground running. My morning routine involves reviewing my calendar, setting priorities, and keeping a close eye on any potential issues that might arise.

The site and management team are my internal customers, as part of my role I align project work with my stakeholder priorities. Much of my time is spent coordinating and integrating project planning and execution efforts. Standard tasks include scheduling in MS Project, budgeting, setting deadlines, spot-checking engineering work, monitoring project portfolio progress, identifying risks, and managing the CAPEX budget.

M: Why did you choose Project Management as a career?

A: Project management is not just a skillset for me; it’s a way of life. It’s a toolkit for managing life’s limited amount of time, energy, and surprises etc effectively and efficiently. I use the same philosophy while managing industry projects as well as making key decisions in life.
This approach has always worked for me; therefore, I think I didn’t choose project work, it chose me, there is project management in everyday life!

M: What do you expect from Esseco UK to support your work and growth?

A: I expect Esseco UK to offer a flexible work environment, including remote work options, to foster a healthy work-life balance. Recognition for contributions and hard work, growth opportunities, and meaningful, transparent communication and engagement are aspects I value.

M: In your opinion, what are the strengths of Esseco UK?

A: Esseco UK has a highly experienced management team, solid balance sheet, dedicated customer base, and a strong brand presence in the industry.

M: What motivates you?

A: Studies show that on average 12% of the budget for projects are wasted due to poor management and decision-making. Considering the trillions invested in projects worldwide each year, imagine how much waste we could reduce by good project management? The idea of minimising waste motivates me to continually improve my skills, deliver quality work, and contribute to sustainability in my own way.

M: When you are not at work, what do you like to do?

A: Outside of work, I enjoy spending time playing with my daughters and listening to gossip from my wife! I also occasionally enjoy watching cricket.

M: Can you sum up your approach to work in a sentence?

A: Approach your work with sincerity, honesty, and good intentions, coupled with meticulous project planning. It’s remarkable how the universe aligns to deliver successful project outcomes.

M: Any fun facts you’d like to share with us?

A: During a visit to the Harbin International Ice and Snow Sculpture Festival in China, I decided to embrace the experience by taking a plunge into a barrel of icy water — because sometimes, you just have to jump in and feel something new!

We’re thrilled to welcome Ashok to our team!
Wishing him not just success in his work, but also a fantastic time as part of the Esseco UK family.
