At Esseco UK, safety isn’t a checklist or a formality — it’s a shared responsibility that shapes how we work, how we collaborate, and how we protect each other every day. From the leadership team to the operators on the shop floor, everyone plays a part.
“Safety is the first of our core values,” explains Andrea Pick, SHE (Safety, Health & Environment) Officer at Esseco UK. “It’s not just about rules — it’s about how we care for our people, our community, and those who rely on our products.”
As a COMAH upper-tier site, Esseco UK handles hazardous substances such as sulphur dioxide and nitrous ammonia. In this context, safety goes beyond compliance. It becomes a mindset — embedded into daily practice and continuously reinforced through open dialogue, training, and visibility.
Safety in Practice: A Culture of Visibility and Action
Andrea is a familiar face across the site. Her presence isn’t just symbolic — it creates trust and space for direct conversations.
“People know they can come to me if they have concerns,” she says. “That’s how we spot issues early and make sure they’re addressed properly.”
The goal is simple: zero harm. But achieving that requires constant attention, shared ownership, and clear communication.
A recent example brought this to life. During a complex maintenance project on one of the site’s buildings, the team implemented additional safeguards by involving external specialists and internal representatives.
“Everyone was consulted — from contractors to operators — and the planning improved as a result,” Andrea reflects. “It’s a reminder that good safety starts with listening.”
Learning Together: Turning Incidents into Insight
At Esseco UK, even minor incidents are treated as opportunities to learn. A newly introduced system of Safety Alerts allows teams to share observations and best practices across departments — reinforcing the idea that small details can make a big difference.
“We recently had a minor diesel leak,” Andrea recalls. “It wasn’t serious, but it sparked a useful conversation about controls and awareness. That’s how we grow.”
This culture of proactive engagement has real results.
The site recently passed 2,300 days without a reportable accident — a milestone that reflects consistent, collective effort over time.
“When we hit 2,000 days, it felt huge,” Andrea says. “I’ve worked in other companies, but I’ve never seen a safety culture like this.”
Safety Is a Communication
Safety at Esseco UK is dynamic.
It evolves with the environment, new legislation, and internal reviews. It’s supported by audits, updated procedures, and — most importantly — people who take it seriously.
“Working safely means being aware, following procedures, and taking responsibility — for yourself and your colleagues,” Andrea explains. “We all have a role to play in creating a respectful, secure workplace.”
It’s a mindset she brings to work every day — grounded in care, trust, and collaboration.
“Having a good team across departments makes all the difference,” she smiles. “Because when safety becomes part of how we work — every day — that’s when it really works.
