Today we caught up with Katelyn Taylor, Management Accountant at Esseco UK. Katleyn joined the EUK team to pursue her finance career and qualifications through an apprenticeship. Katelyn’s progression and development highlights what can happen when talent and determination to succeed are met with the right opportunities.
In this interview Katlyn talks to us about her current role and her apprenticeship journey.
Can you introduce yourself?
My name is Katelyn Taylor and I am a Management Accountant at Esseco UK.
What is your role at Esseco UK?
My role involves overseeing the sales ledger and credit control processes while providing guidance to the team. I handle reconciliations, financial analysis and month-end tasks such as accruals, prepayments and journal postings. I also support the financial controller with balance sheet reconciliations, variance reporting and month-end closing activities. Additionally, I assist with financial audits, assess financial systems for improvements and provide cover for purchase ledger processing when needed.
When I first joined, I started in the purchase ledger, dealing with invoices and suppliers. Over time, I moved into more analytical and reporting aspects of the role, gaining experience across different areas of the finance function. Now, I also support other colleagues, including mentoring our new apprentice
Was there a specific moment or event that made you realise you wanted to work in this finance?
Yes, I’ve always enjoyed working with numbers and problem-solving. After high school, I attended a careers fair where I discovered accountancy apprenticeships. That steered me towards finance, and I pursued accountancy at college instead of general maths. The opportunity to apply my skills in a real work environment through an apprenticeship was very appealing.
What appealed to you about the apprenticeship route vs other routes to qualify?
After some work experience during college, I realised I preferred learning on the job. An apprenticeship allowed me to earn money while gaining practical experience and studying for my qualifications. It felt more like the right route for me rather than uni.
What do you love most about your job?
I love the variety. While I have set responsibilities that give me structure, I also get to work with different departments and provide financial insights that impact decision-making. It’s rewarding to see how my work supports the company’s goals.
What do you find most challenging in your work?
I tend to be a perfectionist, which sometimes makes me overcheck my work. While attention to detail is crucial in finance, it can also slow me down. Finding the right balance is an ongoing challenge.
Is there a project or achievement you are particularly proud of?
I’m especially proud of completing both of my AAT apprenticeships and passing all my Level 4 exams on the first try. It’s fulfilling to apply everything I learned to my current role.
If you could describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Kind, Driven, Organised
Can you explain your answer?
I had to improve my time management skills while working and studying, which made me more organised. I’m driven because I always aim to progress professionally, and I’d like to think of myself as kind in how I support my colleagues.
What is a personal interest that might surprise those who only know you at work?
My passion for the gym and running. I enjoy setting new physical goals and staying active, which helps me stay focused and mentally balanced—especially useful during intense study periods.
How would you describe the Esseco UK team in three words?
Supportive, Collaborative, Friendly
What’s something unique about the way people work together at Esseco UK?
In the finance team, we have weekly meetings that encourage us to ask questions and support one another. There’s a strong culture of mentorship and openness—no question is considered silly. This atmosphere has been especially valuable for me as I progressed through my apprenticeship.
Is there someone who has inspired or supported your journey at Esseco UK?
Yes, my manager has played a key role. He guided me through both apprenticeships and is now supporting my journey towards becoming Chartered. He’s always shared tips and been a great example.
If you could go back in time and give advice to your younger self at the beginning of your career, what would it be?
Stop worrying so much. Just try everything you’re given and take every opportunity to learn. It’s easy to overthink when you’re starting out, but everything you do adds up and helps you grow.
